I would like to ask a question:
Based on the fact that only 50% of NTA membership took the time to vote on the partial contract ratification, is is fair to assume that some teachers are/were uncomfortable with the practice of a partial contract, and how it may be used again in the future to avoid wholistic negotiations?
Great question. Thanks.
Our membership is nearly 50% new (meaning 5 or less years in the district), so our participation rate is typically this low when it comes to matters such as these. Actually, the number of members voting was a pretty good turnout in retrospect. As you know, teaching is very taxing physically and mentally, snd many teachers only have enough energy to keep up with their profession, then their own families/personal lives, much less anything else.
As far as we know, this is the first and only time we have done a partial ratification, and we don't know if we will ever have to do it again. With the state and districts each year dragging out their budget and negotiation settlements out longer and longer, the need for it comes up.
